The Kaduna State House of Assembly has repealed the laws establishing the Zaria Metropolitan Authority, Kafanchan Municipal Authority, and the Kaduna Capital Territory Authority. This decision comes in response to a recent Supreme Court ruling on local governments in Nigeria.
Speaker Dahiru Liman made the announcement after Mahmud Lawal, the Chairman of a Joint Committee, presented a report. The report highlighted the need to align the state’s laws with the Supreme Court’s decision and the Nigerian Constitution.
Originally enacted in 2021, these laws created metropolitan authorities to oversee specific functions in their respective areas. However, the Supreme Court’s ruling and a constitutional review determined that these functions should be managed by local governments.
Mahmud Lawal, representing the Zaria City Constituency and chairing the Joint Committee, explained that repealing the laws was essential for local government authorities to effectively perform their duties, now that they have gained autonomy.
In addition, the Assembly repealed the Fire and Public Safety Law No.20 of 2018, replacing it with the Kaduna State Fire and Public Safety Law, 2024, to enhance fire safety and public safety in the state.
