Uche Nwosu, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former chief of staff to Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, has appealed to Nigerians to allow President Bola Tinubu more time to address the country’s longstanding issues. This plea comes in response to the planned nationwide protest set to commence on August 1.
Nwosu emphasized that it is unrealistic to expect immediate solutions from a government that has been in office for just a year. He urged Nigerians to be patient and give President Tinubu the necessary time to implement reforms and correct the systemic issues that have plagued the nation for decades.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, Nwosu expressed concern over the rising tension and mixed reactions sparked by the planned protest, which has been motivated by the high cost of living and economic hardship in the country.
“Let me use this opportunity to appeal to our beloved Nigerian youths to give peace a chance. We are indeed passing through hard times in our dear nation. But we cannot give up like those who do not have hope. It is true that in a democracy citizens have the right to protest but most often the protests in Nigeria where we have 250 ethnic groups do not end well,” Nwosu said.
He cited the EndSARS protest as an example of a peaceful demonstration that was eventually hijacked, leading to significant property damage and loss of lives. Nwosu acknowledged that while some of President Tinubu’s policies might seem harsh initially, they are steps towards long-term improvement.
“He is barely a year in office. Why don’t we give him time to correct all the abnormalities we have seen in this country, the abnormalities of yesterday? Let’s give him time to correct them so that we can have a country of our collective hopes and aspirations. There is no place like home. Nigeria is our country. Let’s have a country where you and I will live and say this is our country,” he added.
