Nigeria’s Super Falcons must now defeat Japan in their final group game and hope for favorable results in other matches to have a chance of advancing as one of the best losers in the ongoing Olympics football event in Paris.
The Super Falcons suffered a 1-0 loss to Spain on Sunday, their second consecutive defeat by the same margin, leaving them at the bottom of Group C. Randy Waldrum’s team struggled to convert their few chances, and Spain’s Alexia Putellas capitalized on this by scoring directly from a free-kick in the final minutes.
Similarly, the Falcons lost 1-0 to Brazil in their opening game.
In the other Group C match, Japan stunned Brazil with a dramatic 2-1 victory. Momoko Tanikawa scored a remarkable 96th-minute winner, following an earlier equalizer from captain Saki Kumagai in injury time. Jhennifer had initially put Brazil ahead early in the second half. The result leaves Japan and Brazil tied on three points each after two matches.
