The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has strongly refuted claims that the state’s debt has been reduced by over 40% in the past year. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s Executive Assistant, Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, recently stated on a Lagos radio program that the governor reduced the state’s debt by more than ₦180 billion and saved over ₦205 billion through careful financial management.
However, the APC, through its Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, labeled these claims as “a pack of lies” designed to mislead the public. The APC criticized the state government, arguing that despite high allocations and internally generated revenue, Delta State remains one of the poorest in terms of capital project development.
Onojeghuo also accused the previous administration under Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and the current administration of accumulating massive debts, with little to show for it in terms of development. He further alleged that a significant portion of federal revenue allocated to Delta is being used to service these debts, leaving the state with insufficient funds for capital projects. The APC condemned the state government’s attempts to portray the debt reduction as an achievement, calling it “the most shameful lie ever peddled.”
