Former Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka has called for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to resolve all election petitions before the swearing-in of elected officials. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics program, Chidoka emphasized the need to prevent elected officials from exploiting legal gaps in the electoral process.
Chidoka pointed out that INEC has the authority to review election results within seven days but noted that this mechanism has not been fully utilized. He suggested that all paper ballots be scanned and reviewed by election auditors to ensure the accuracy of the results.
Referring to the recent off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states, which are still being contested in court, Chidoka stressed the importance of resolving all disputes before officials assume office. He also advocated for the implementation of the Justice Uwais report and the establishment of an Election Offences Tribunal to address electoral misconduct.
