The Anambra State Government has issued a stern warning that buildings constructed by uncertified developers or fake development control agents are at risk of demolition due to the alarming rate of building collapses across the state. The warning was delivered by Chike Maduekwe, Chairman and Managing Director of the Anambra State Physical Planning Board (ASPPB), during an inspection tour of several communities in Idemili North Local Government Area on Tuesday.
Maduekwe emphasized that the state government is committed to addressing the root causes of these collapses, many of which have been linked to structures built by unqualified individuals. Over the past seven months, more than 20 buildings, including residential, commercial, and school facilities, have collapsed in Anambra State, resulting in over 25 fatalities and numerous injuries. Investigations by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria and other building authorities have identified poor construction practices as a significant factor in these incidents.
During the inspection, Maduekwe noted that despite multiple warnings and “Stop Work” notices, some developers continued construction and even threatened or assaulted government inspectors. He stressed that the building sector must be regulated, and developers are required to present valid building permits.
The state government has launched an “Operation Show Your Building Permit” initiative, giving developers until October 31 to obtain and present their permits. Maduekwe warned that any structure found without a proper permit after the deadline would be demolished, and the owners would face legal action.
“Following the constant collapse of buildings in the state, the Anambra State Government has embarked on ‘Operation Show Your Building Permit’ aimed at sanitizing the sector. Mr. Governor has told us that we should not allow any person to intimidate any official government worker anymore, and we want to send out a message to the developers. Please, don’t think the government is playing,” Maduekwe stated.
He reiterated that the days of impunity and lawlessness in the building sector are over, and that every building must comply with government regulations. Developers who have started construction without permits, often due to land disputes or lack of proper documentation, are urged to rectify their status immediately.
The state government’s crackdown is a response to the growing concern over safety and the need to protect lives and property in Anambra State. As part of this effort, all building approvals are currently under review, and developers are required to revalidate their permits to ensure compliance with safety standards.
