The 8th National Youth Games were officially opened today by the Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State. Enoh highlighted the significance of the event, calling it a symbol of hope for the future of Nigeria’s sports sector.
In his speech, Enoh emphasized the critical role grassroots sports play in developing young talent and positioning Nigeria as a global force in sports. He reiterated the importance of fostering future champions, as well as promoting national unity through such events.
“Grassroots sports development is the foundation for a thriving sports industry,” Enoh said, noting that the National Youth Games is a vital platform for discovering and nurturing emerging talent.
Enoh also stressed the economic and diplomatic power of sports, stating, “Sports create wealth, promote peace, foster national unity, and facilitate international diplomacy.” He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to revitalizing the sports sector under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aligning with the administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
Reflecting on lessons from the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Enoh pointed out the need for a holistic framework that nurtures athletes from grassroots levels to elite competition, beyond just talent identification.
He also lauded Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his unwavering support for grassroots sports, especially during the challenges of organizing a national event of this scale. With 4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials approved to participate, this year’s Games have set a record in size and scale.
Enoh expressed gratitude to the governors of the participating states and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for their sponsorship and continued support. He encouraged athletes to compete with integrity, embodying the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship.
“This year’s National Youth Games is an opportunity to kick-start the journey of developing the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions,” Enoh concluded.
