Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged all political stakeholders in Edo State to prioritize peace and security ahead of the upcoming governorship election. In a statement, he emphasized the importance of conducting a free and fair election, highlighting that democracy loses its value if citizens cannot exercise their political choices freely.
Jonathan called for neutrality from state institutions involved in the electoral process, particularly the police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He stressed the need for these agencies to uphold their constitutional responsibilities and maintain a level playing field to foster public confidence in the electoral system.
He warned that a loss of trust in the electoral process could lead to political disputes, social unrest, and increased polarization. Jonathan’s message comes as the Edo election approaches, with an emphasis on ensuring that citizens can elect leaders who will provide good governance and promote peace and prosperity.
