Former Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel has lauded Ademola Lookman for his decision to represent Nigeria instead of England in international football. Speaking on ESPN, Mikel praised the Atalanta forward for committing to Nigeria early in his career, contrasting him with some players born outside Nigeria who delay their decisions until they are overlooked by their birth countries.

Mikel stated, “If you wait and decline, you want to play for Germany or England, just wait. Commit to your decision. But don’t wait until you are past your best and become a second option.” He emphasized that Lookman’s quick switch to Nigeria was commendable, highlighting the player’s impressive performances, including at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations where he played a key role in Nigeria reaching the final.

Lookman had previously represented England at the U-19, U-20, and U-21 levels before opting for Nigeria in 2022. Since then, he has made a significant impact, scoring eight goals in 25 appearances for the Super Eagles.
