Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has credited Belgian footballer Dries Mertens for being a major influence in his career and the reason he followed Galatasaray’s games even before joining the Turkish club.
Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray on loan from Napoli in September, spoke warmly of his bond with Mertens, a former teammate at Napoli. “I had been watching Galatasaray games because of Mertens; he is someone I deeply admire,” Osimhen said in an interview with Tutto Sport.
The 25-year-old Nigerian striker added that Mertens, along with his family, has played a crucial role in motivating him throughout his journey. Osimhen is not the only big name at the club, as Argentine forward Mario Icardi also shares the spotlight. Despite initial concerns about potential rivalry between the two strikers, Galatasaray’s coach Okan Buruk has managed to create a harmonious environment.
“Icardi? I’d known him for years before coming to Galatasaray. He is a legend here, and I believe I can learn a lot from him,” Osimhen said, expressing optimism about their collaboration on the field.
Osimhen has already made a strong impression in Turkey, scoring two goals and providing four assists in just four matches, including a brace in an exciting 3-3 draw against Kasımpaşa. Mertens contributed with an assist during the same match, further cementing their connection.
However, Galatasaray are now facing concerns over Osimhen’s fitness following a muscle injury sustained during that game. Fans and the club alike are hopeful for his swift recovery.
