Tension mounts as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is set to announce its decision today regarding the controversial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between Nigeria and Libya. The match, part of Group D, has drawn significant scrutiny following reports of poor treatment faced by the Nigerian team upon their arrival in Libya for the second leg last Sunday.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) lodged an official complaint with CAF after the Super Eagles were allegedly left stranded at Al Abraq International Airport for over 20 hours without food, water, or support. A video from the Eagles’ media team showed players and officials surrounded by their luggage, seemingly ignored by Libyan airport staff engaged in conversation.
The team’s logistical nightmare began with an unexpected flight diversion, landing them more than 200 kilometers away from their match venue at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium. The airport, lacking essential facilities and a welcoming committee, exacerbated the situation.
The Libyan Football Federation responded to the NFF’s complaints by alleging non-cooperation from the Nigerian side, claiming that the treatment the Libyan team received in Nigeria was similarly difficult.
