Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, affirmed that lawmakers are dedicated to mitigating the country’s economic challenges by reducing their salaries by 50%.
Speaking to newsmen on Friday in Abuja, Agbese addressed the skepticism expressed by some Nigerians regarding the salary cut.
The motion for a 50% salary reduction was raised during a plenary session by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, emphasizing its urgent importance.
Agbese stressed the parliament’s commitment to tackling economic hardships, stating, “Hardships speak in a universal language. As a parliament, we will leave no stone unturned to address them. This will be the last time we discuss palliatives. We will work tirelessly to overcome this hardship and hunger.”
He emphasized that the salary cut represents more than just a sacrifice; it symbolizes the attitude necessary for national transformation. Agbese assured that the commitment to the 50% salary cut is genuine and not mere rhetoric, highlighting the parliament’s dedication to various empowerment interventions through constituency projects.
“We are working on different empowerment initiatives to provide relief to our people, supporting young men and women in agriculture, empowering businesses, and aiding students,” Agbese explained.
He urged the public to trust the lawmakers’ patriotic and selfless intentions behind the salary cut, noting that the genuine desire to help should not be met with unnecessary doubt.
“When there is hunger, it shows on people’s faces. When interventions are made, it will also show on their faces,” Agbese concluded.
