FC Barcelona has announced that first-team goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen will undergo surgery following a knee injury sustained during the match against Villarreal. In a statement released on the club’s website, Barcelona confirmed that ter Stegen will have the procedure on Monday after tests revealed a complete rupture of the patella tendon in his right knee.
The injury occurred in the first half at Estadio de la Cerámica when Ter Stegen awkwardly landed while collecting a cross from Villarreal. He was visibly in pain and was promptly replaced by Iñaki Peña.
Despite the setback, the team managed to secure a 5-1 victory over Villarreal, marking their sixth straight win in La Liga. Ter Stegen’s appearance in this match was notable, as it was his 289th for the club, making him the third-highest goalkeeper in appearances, surpassing legendary figure Antoni Ramallets.
Barcelona’s coach, Hansi Flick, expressed concern over the injury, stating, “I think it will be a huge injury when he laid down on the field… you can see it directly.” The club has promised to provide updates following the surgery.
