Former Senate President David Mark is facing growing pressure from influential figures within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to assume the role of national chairman. Reports suggest that two prominent military figures, including a past president and a former Minister of Defense, have urged Mark to help stabilize the party ahead of its next national convention.
The push comes as the PDP deals with internal conflicts, particularly surrounding the acting national chairman, Amb. Illiya Damagum, and calls for a permanent replacement from the North Central Zone. Although Mark is seen as a unifying figure capable of handling the party’s factional tensions, he remains cautious due to the legal complexities and the ongoing rifts within the party, especially between factions aligned with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Despite the mounting pressure, Mark has yet to express his willingness to take on the role but acknowledges the need for leadership amid the PDP’s internal struggles.
