The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo State has denied allegations that it obstructed political parties from inspecting election materials and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) used in the recent governorship election.
In a statement released on Wednesday by Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo State, INEC described the claims as baseless and misleading. The statement was in response to accusations from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, who alleged that the commission was not complying with a court order to allow inspection of the election materials.
Onuoha emphasized that INEC had scheduled the inspection for Wednesday at its Benin headquarters, reaffirming the commission’s commitment to transparency and fairness. He clarified that at no point did INEC prevent any political party or its representatives from accessing the materials.
He also assured the public that INEC remains dedicated to upholding the rule of law and facilitating the inspection process as required by law. All political parties were invited to participate in the inspection, ensuring adherence to legal procedures.
Onuoha urged stakeholders to disregard misinformation, affirming that INEC is committed to conducting free, fair, and accountable elections.
