The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally requested the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to launch a thorough investigation into the alleged corruption surrounding medical supply contracts distributed across the state’s 44 local government areas.
This call was made by Kano State APC Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, who, in a statement issued in Kano, urged the EFCC to suspend the financial accounts of the local government councils to prevent further exploitation under the guise of collaborative projects.
Abbas expressed disbelief at Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s claimed ignorance of the corruption, suggesting it reflects his inability to govern effectively. He also criticized the governor’s directive to the state Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the matter, arguing that it falls short of what is required.
The APC Chairman raised concerns about the credibility of the commission’s chairman, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, accusing him of partisanship and lacking the authority to conduct a fair investigation, particularly into allegations involving the governor’s father-in-law and NNPP leader, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.
Abbas also pointed to other instances of financial mismanagement by officials in the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), including controversial contracts worth N27 billion for the construction of two interchange bridges in Kano, with payment split between the state and local governments.
Kano State Commissioner for Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, responded by commending Governor Yusuf for initiating an inquiry into the procurement contract for drug supplies. He insisted that the contracts for the interchange roads were awarded through due process and criticized the APC’s calls for court-imposed restrictions on investigations.
Dantiye also highlighted public demands for an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of local government funds by the former First Lady, emphasizing the state administration’s commitment to accountability and enforcing legal standards in procurement processes.
