The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the rescheduling of its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting from September 26 to October 24. The delay, attributed to ongoing congress disputes in eight states, has sparked criticism from within the party.
The NEC meeting was initially planned for August 15 but was first postponed to September 26 due to members traveling for religious reasons. The latest postponement, announced on September 13, has been met with discontent among some party leaders.
Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the PDP National Secretary, justified the delay by citing the need for complete congress reports from states including Abia, Ebonyi, Benue, Ekiti, Kano, Kaduna, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, and Sokoto. He emphasized that the congresses were hindered by litigation and logistical issues, making it essential to reschedule the meeting to ensure comprehensive reporting.
However, several party members have expressed frustration with the postponement. A senior National Working Committee (NWC) member, speaking anonymously, alleged that the delay serves specific interests rather than the broader needs of the party. They questioned the feasibility of resolving all litigation within a month and suggested that the meeting could have proceeded with an update on the situation.
PDP Deputy National Youth Leader Timothy Osadolor also voiced opposition to the rescheduling, acknowledging the legitimacy of the reasons but criticizing the timing as potentially obstructive. He called for urgent resolution of party issues, emphasizing the NEC’s role in addressing critical concerns and moving the party forward.
