Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has expressed concern over the rising mental health issues in Nigeria, attributing the increase to the worsening economic conditions under President Bola Tinubu’s administration. In a message marking World Mental Health Day, Obi highlighted that mental health is a critical issue that has been neglected in the country.
He pointed to the growing cases of anxiety, depression, and suicide, which he said are driven by hunger, poverty, and income inequality. Obi revealed that between 40 to 60 million Nigerians suffer from mental health disorders.
