As the start of nationwide hunger protests approaches in August, the Nigeria Police have announced the withdrawal of private security personnel previously assigned to public officers. This decision aims to bolster the police force’s capacity to manage the anticipated demonstrations effectively.
The police stated that the reassignment is crucial due to the scale of the upcoming protests. According to a memo from CSP Okon Moses of the No2 Squadron, Police Mobile Force, published by Professor Chidi Odinkalu, former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, the withdrawal is a strategic move to ensure a robust police presence during the protests.
The memo, titled “Notification of Temporary Withdrawal of Personnel for National Assignment,” outlines the need for increased police resources to maintain order and manage public spaces effectively during the protests. The police have requested understanding and cooperation from those affected by the personnel changes.
