At least 16 people have tragically lost their lives, and 17 others have sustained injuries in a severe road accident in Oyo State.
According to a report obtained by Naija News, the accident occurred on Tuesday morning along the Ojoo-Iwo Road section of the Ibadan-Lagos expressway, near the Agbowo/Ajao area.
The incident reportedly involved a trailer carrying roofing sheets that collided with an 18-seater Toyota bus, a Micra taxi, and a Honda CR-V. Eyewitnesses stated that the trailer experienced brake failure, leading to the collision with the other three vehicles traveling in the same direction, resulting in a catastrophic crash.
Eyewitnesses Emmanuel Omotoso and Funmi Adejumo suggested that ongoing construction on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway may have contributed to the fatalities, as the opposite lane of the expressway was blocked.
In response to the incident, motorists have urged the Oyo State Government to acquire heavy towing vehicles and ambulance buses to improve emergency rescue operations. They also called on the contractor responsible for the road construction to clear the obstructed lane to prevent future accidents. Private heavy towing vehicles later arrived at the scene to remove the trapped vehicles, and some of the injured passengers were taken to the hospital for medical care.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Oyo State, Roseline Alo, confirmed the accident, stating that 16 individuals died and 17 were injured. Alo also mentioned that the injured were transported to the hospital for treatment, while two individuals escaped unharmed. She noted that the driver of the trailer fled the scene following the accident.
