Man Admits to Killing and Burying Motorcyclist in Akwa Ibom

As Police parade 20 vandals, other suspects. A 23-year-old man from Ibiono Ibom local government area of Akwa Ibom State, identified as Daniel Edem Okon, has confessed to killing a commercial motorcyclist and burying him in a shallow grave.

Speaking at the police headquarters in Ikot AkpanAbia, Uyo, Okon revealed that he stabbed the motorcyclist, Saviour Anthony Effiong (45), to death with a knife, buried him, and stole his motorcycle to sell it for money.

“I am from Ibiono Ibom local government area. I am 23 years old. I took the motorcyclist from Idoro road and on the way I used a knife and stabbed him on the neck. After stabbing him to death, I buried him. I needed the motorcycle. I was arrested when I was going to Nassarawa, in Itam. I was looking for a buyer,” Okon said.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Waheed Ayilara, who paraded Edem Okon alongside other suspects, including twenty suspected vandals, disclosed that Okon was arrested during a stop-and-search operation. He advised commercial motorcyclists to avoid taking passengers to isolated places at night, as criminals exploit such locations to rob their victims.

“On 12/7/2024 at about 8:30 pm, operatives of the command on routine patrol accosted two suspects, Daniel Edem Okon (23) and Samaila Salisu (20), on a motorcycle without an identification number along Timber Market, Uyo. After rigorous interrogation, Okon confessed that on 11/7/2024 at about 9:00 pm, he paid a commercial motorcyclist for a ride from Idoro Road to Mbikpon Ikot Edim. Upon reaching a lonely area, he hacked the rider to death with a machete. He then buried him in a shallow grave and took the motorcycle,” Ayilara said.

The shallow grave was discovered, and the decomposed body of the victim, Saviour Anthony Effiong, was exhumed and deposited at a morgue. His family has been contacted. Ayilara reiterated the importance of motorcyclists avoiding lonely places at night.

Additionally, Ayilara mentioned ongoing issues with kidnapping in the Oron nation axis. Through credible information and investigation, operatives of the command recovered firearms and ammunition used by a notorious kidnapping syndicate led by wanted kidnapper Ubong Effiong Archibong, a.k.a Condiment.
