The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a stern warning to heads of tertiary institutions to refrain from increasing tuition fees following the Federal Government’s introduction of student loans through the NELFUND scheme.
In a statement released after NANS’s 74th Senate sitting in Kano, signed by Comrade Okunomo Adewumi, the student body expressed strong opposition to any unjustified tuition hikes. The statement emphasized that institutions implementing such increases would face significant backlash from NANS, including mobilizing members for decisive action.
“The leadership of NANS is prepared to take strong measures against any institution that raises tuition fees under the pretense of the student loan scheme,” the statement read.
NANS also called for an immediate reduction in tuition fees across all tertiary institutions to alleviate the financial burden on students.
Regarding the proposed mass protests related to the current economic situation, NANS advised its members to remain patient and observe the government’s response. The organization acknowledged the right to peaceful protests but stressed that any actions undermining their efforts would not be supported.
“We understand the motivations behind the proposed protests but urge our members to stay calm and wait for the government’s response to our demands. We will take necessary actions if our concerns are not addressed, while also respecting the right to peaceful demonstrations,” the statement concluded.
