The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed the death of three construction workers following a building collapse at Arowojobe Estate in Maryland, Lagos. The incident was reported at No 13, Wilson Mba St., where the three deceased, all male, were working on-site.
LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, provided details of the tragic event through a statement released Thursday morning.
“The agency received a distress call regarding a collapsed building at the above address at about 3:49 a.m., prompting the immediate activation of our response team to the scene at 3:58 a.m.,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated. Upon arrival, they discovered that a set of three terraces under construction had collapsed.
Search and rescue operations commenced immediately, resulting in the recovery of three deceased adult males. Two other male adults were rescued alive, and one more adult male was extracted from the rubble.
The rescue mission involved efforts from LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire Service. “All six men were site workers. They are receiving pre-hospital care on location while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit has been contacted to handle the remains of the three fatalities,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.
A combined team of agency personnel, fire service, and Nigeria Police are currently working at the scene. LASEMA’s excavator has been deployed to expedite the search and rescue operations.
