Midoil Refining and Petrochemicals Company Limited has officially begun construction of its refinery in Lagos, marking the occasion with a turning of the sod ceremony at Shekungba, Ikosi/Ejinrin Local Council Development Area.
The event was led by Midoil’s Executive Chairman, Mrs. Elizabeth-Omolara Akintonde, who was accompanied by dignitaries to the expansive site. Akintonde assured community leaders and residents that the refinery would bring significant development to their areas, generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities.
She praised the local village heads for standing firm against attempts to bribe them into breaking their agreements. Akintonde, who celebrated her 74th birthday on the same day, emphasized that the Midoil refinery, with a refining capacity of 100,000 barrels per day, would greatly enhance Nigeria’s energy sector.
“All these bushes you see today, in the next couple of months, you will see them no more,” Akintonde stated, expressing her commitment to the project’s completion.
Hajia Amina Abdullahi, a Director of Midoil and Chairman of Serenecity Staff Housing Estate, expressed her joy at the commencement of the project after over a decade of delays. “We have faith in God that we will witness the inauguration of the refinery. We know this is a big project that will go through many processes, but with the turning of the sod today, we have taken the right step,” she said.
