Two individuals were apprehended at Bayero University Kano (BUK) for impersonating lecturers and selling fraudulent textbooks to first-year students. The university’s Acting Registrar, Bala G. Abdullahi, confirmed the arrest in a special announcement.
The suspects, David Iluebe from Edo State and Chike E. Eke from Delta State, posed as faculty members in the Faculty of Engineering. They offered a set of three textbooks, claiming they were essential for students’ Continuous Assessment (C.A.) and threatened failure if the books were not purchased.
According to the university bulletin, the suspects exploited students’ concerns about their course requirements, leading them to buy the books. However, their suspicious behavior prompted a security investigation following a student complaint.
Iluebe and Eke face charges of criminal trespass, impersonation, and fraud. During initial questioning, they admitted to their fraudulent activities, citing unemployment as their motivation. They also revealed that this was their second attempt in Kano State, having previously operated at Kano State Polytechnic earlier this year.
