CAN Issues Directive To Christians Ahead Of Nationwide Protest
On Tuesday, suspected thugs took to the streets of Lagos State, threatening residents not to participate in the hunger protest scheduled from August 1 to 10. In a viral video, the voices of the men can be heard warning market women and men against the planned protest, suggesting it could lead to more destruction than the EndSARS protests.
In the video, the men warned, “Anybody that is confident should come out on Thursday to protest. Are you the only one hungry? If you dare come out for the protest, you will be mercilessly dealt with.”
This threat comes despite the directive from the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, ordering senior police officers to protect participants of the planned #EndBadGovernance protest. Naija News reports that Egbetokun issued this directive in response to a request from human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa.
Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), had written to the IGP on July 26, 2024, on behalf of the Take It Back Movement, one of the groups organizing the End Bad Governance protest in August, requesting police coverage for protesters. In his response letter dated July 29, 2024, the IGP directed senior police officers to address the lawyer’s request.
