President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the entertainment industry following the death of renowned Nigerian singer and actress, Onyeka Onwenu.
Onwenu, affectionately known as the ‘Elegant Stallion,’ passed away shortly after performing at a birthday party in Lagos. She reportedly collapsed at the private function and was later pronounced dead at Reddington Hospital in Victoria Island.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the family of the late artist.
“President Bola Tinubu extends his profound condolences to the family of the late Ms. Onyeka Onwenu,” the statement read. “Ms. Onwenu was a singer, songwriter, actor, journalist, activist, and politician.”
The President reminisced about Onwenu’s significant contributions to the music industry, highlighting her iconic song ‘One Love’ from the 1990s, which promoted fellowship and harmony. He also mentioned her memorable collaboration with King Sunny Ade on ‘Wait for Me,’ a campaign song for family planning in the 1980s.
“President Tinubu celebrates the life of the versatile and extremely gifted artiste who applied herself to the whole gamut of artistic enterprise and expression, bringing joy and laughter to many,” the statement continued.
The President also extended his condolences to the entertainment industry, the Imo State Government, and Onwenu’s numerous fans over this immeasurable loss. He prayed for the repose of her soul and that she finds eternal peace where the music never fades and there is ‘Dancing in the Sun.’
“President Tinubu states that Ms. Onwenu lives on in her immortal masterpieces,” the statement concluded.
