In a recent interview on Kadaria Ahmed’s podcast, “Quarter to 12,” veteran Nigerian singer Onyeka Onwenu shared details about an unexpected marriage proposal from the late Afrobeat icon, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Onwenu, now 71, recounted how Fela, after being jailed for smuggling money earned from a tour, fell for her advocacy against his arrest. Following his release, Fela invited Onwenu to his home, fully expecting her to decline his proposal—a bet he reportedly made.
Earlier this year, Onyeka discussed her previous marriage in an interview with Kikilomo Atanda-Owo, revealing that while she did not want the marriage to end, staying in it would have been detrimental to her well-being.
