Abraham and Tijani Ogunlende, the sons of the late legendary singer Onyeka Onwenu, have publicly addressed their mother’s recent passing on July 30, 2024. In a heartfelt statement, they detailed the circumstances of her death and expressed deep gratitude for the support they have received.
The sons revealed that Onyeka Onwenu was rushed to the hospital after a remarkable performance. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, she passed away later that night in Lagos, Nigeria.
“Our hearts are heavy as we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Onyeka Onwenu,” the statement read. “She departed on the night of July 30, 2024, after an extraordinary performance. The doctors did all they could to save her, but unfortunately, she did not make it.”
They described their mother as a national treasure, whose influence extended beyond music to acting, philanthropy, and humanitarian efforts. “Onyeka Onwenu was an icon whose legacy will endure through the generations she inspired,” they said.
The Ogunlende brothers extended their gratitude to those who supported their mother during her final moments, including Peter Obi, Governor Alex Otti, and others such as Mr. and Mrs. John Momoh, Mr. and Mrs. Okonkwo, Ajayi, and Okpara. They also thanked Reddington Hospital and its staff for their dedicated efforts.
“We are deeply appreciative of everyone’s support during this difficult time,” they added. “As we honor her life and legacy, we ask everyone to remember the profound impact she had on so many lives, including ours.”
