Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has mandated an immediate investigation into the delays in passport processing at the Nigerian Embassy in London. This order follows a protest at the embassy on Wednesday, sparked by complaints of a six-month wait to renew or secure a new passport unless a $300 fee is paid.
A viral video posted by Oluomo of Derby (@oluomoofderby) on X shows protesters demanding the resignation of Bashir Aminu, with placards stating “Bashir Aminu Must Go,” “Nigerians In Diaspora are suffering,” and “No More Wait For Six Months. We Say No to $300.”
Another X user, OfficeOfTheNigerianCitizen (@kcemenike), alleged that the Ministry of Interior issued a memo instructing the embassy to charge $300 for fast-tracked passport processing. According to the user, applicants who refuse to pay this fee experience a six-month delay.
The allegations claim that this fee has turned obtaining a passport into a lengthy and difficult process, forcing many to pay the exorbitant amount to expedite their applications.
In response, Minister Tunji-Ojo addressed the situation on Wednesday, assuring that an investigation is underway and that appropriate actions will be taken.
“My attention has been drawn to the complaints at the Nigerian Embassy in London regarding issues with passport applications. I have ordered an immediate investigation into the matters arising, and I assure you that corresponding actions will be taken soonest. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all affected citizens as we strive towards an efficient service delivery in line with global best practices,” Tunji-Ojo stated on his X handle.
