Nigerians have taken to the streets across the country in a massive demonstration against hunger and economic hardship under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The nationwide protest, dubbed “Days of Rage,” began today and is scheduled to continue until August 10. The call for action was led by prominent human rights lawyers, including Femi Falana, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, and Deji Adeyanju, as well as former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore and the Take It Back movement.
Dr. Isa El-Buba, General Overseer and President of El-Buba Outreach Ministries International (EBOMI), spearheaded the protest in Jos, Plateau State, assuring participants of a peaceful demonstration. Protesters gathered at the Plateau Secretariat overhead bridge early in the morning before moving towards the old airport roundabout in Jos.
In Bauchi and Abuja, protests faced significant disruptions. In Bauchi, demonstrators who gathered in front of the Emir of Bauchi’s palace were met with police barricades and tear gas. Similarly, in Abuja, protesters around the federal secretariat were dispersed with tear gas by the Nigeria Police Force.
In Lagos, the impact of the protest was visibly felt with streets largely deserted. Businesses, including banks, eateries, and fuel stations, were closed, and armed security forces were positioned strategically throughout the city. Additionally, in Kano, police successfully dispersed a group of youths attempting to break into a store along Zoo Road, causing damage to the building in the process.
As the protests continue, reports indicate heavy police presence in various locations, including Ojota, Lagos State, and Alausa, Lagos’s seat of power. Naija News will continue to provide updates on this evolving situation.
