Protests across Bauchi State and Abuja were disrupted on Thursday as police deployed tear gas to disperse demonstrators.
In Bauchi, a group of protesters gathered outside the Emir of Bauchi’s palace, seeking a meeting to address their grievances. They were confronted with a police barricade, and despite their efforts to engage with the Emir, the police used tear gas to break up the gathering.
In Abuja, tear gas was also used by Nigeria Police Force (NPF) operatives against protesters near the federal secretariat. This incident was part of the nationwide “10 Days of Rage” protests, which are aimed at highlighting economic difficulties and demanding urgent government action.
The protests, which have seen the hashtag. End Bad Governance trending on social media, focus on the rising inflation and economic challenges facing the country. Large numbers of security forces have been deployed to maintain order and prevent violence, resulting in deserted roads across various cities.
While authorities have encouraged peaceful protests and upheld the right to assembly, the use of tear gas has raised concerns about the handling of the demonstrations and the government’s response to the widespread unrest.
