In Maiduguri, Borno State capital, protests erupted into chaos on Thursday as demonstrators clashed with police forces. The situation escalated when officers fired tear gas to disperse the crowd, and gunshots were heard, though no casualties have been reported so far.
The protesters, numbering in the hundreds, set up roadblocks, disrupting vehicular traffic and vandalizing vehicles that attempted to pass. They were seen chanting anti-government slogans and holding signs with messages such as “Ba ma yi,” “Tinubu must go,” “End the bad governance,” and “There is hunger.”
As the protestors marched towards the Government House to voice their grievances to Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, fighter jets were observed patrolling the skies. One protester, Muhammad, emphasized that their determination would not waver despite the police’s use of tear gas and gunfire.
The demonstration, which began early with a mix of children and adults, has grown significantly. Security measures have been heightened to manage the crowd and prevent any potential infiltration by Boko Haram militants. A senior security source indicated that these measures are intended to handle the situation carefully while preventing any escalation of violence.
