Hundreds of protesters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are refusing to back down despite gunshots and teargas fired by security operatives. Naija News reports that a large number of demonstrators are currently marching on a major road in Kugbo, Asokoro, within the Abuja Municipal Council Area (AMAC).
This protest comes after a Federal High Court in Abuja had restricted demonstrators to Moshood Abiola Stadium. While some protesters complied and moved to the stadium, others assembled at various locations across the capital.
According to Daily Trust, security operatives are struggling to control the crowd, consisting largely of young people who insist on staying on the streets until their demands for an improved economy are met.
Asokoro, where the protesters are gathered, is a significant area that houses Nigeria’s seat of power, government establishments, military barracks, and the head office of the Department of State Services (DSS).
Tinubu’s Minister Faces Resistance at Abuja Protest
At Eagles Square in Abuja, Minister of State for Youth Development Ayodele Olawande encountered resistance from protesters who chanted “hunger dey,” drowning out his voice as he attempted to address them.
After calming the crowd, Olawande reassured them that he was not there to suppress the protest, sharing his own experiences of participating in numerous demonstrations. “I’m not here to fight you or stop your protest; it’s your right,” he said. He also promised to address the police regarding their use of canisters against the protesters.
