The Importers Association of Nigeria (IMAN) has accused the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) of disregarding President Bola Tinubu’s executive order that suspends import duties and tariffs on food items. IMAN’s northern Chairman, Aminu Dan-Iya, stated that despite the presidential directive, customs officials continue to levy import duties.
Dan-Iya reported that customs officials claim they haven’t received official communication regarding the suspension, leading to ongoing duties for importers. He expressed confusion over the delay in implementing such a significant order and highlighted public outrage over rising food prices, which are allegedly unaffected by the supposed tax removal.
President Tinubu announced the suspension in July as part of a strategy to combat the hunger crisis. Despite a video from Customs Comptroller General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi affirming the implementation of the order, IMAN’s concerns reflect a significant gap between official announcements and practical enforcement.
