On Tuesday, the Gombe State Police Command arrested 10 individuals carrying Russian flags during the #EndBadGovernance protest. Commissioner of Police Hayatu Usman, represented by Public Relations Officer ASP Buhari Abdullahi, briefed journalists at the state Criminal Investigation Department, emphasizing that displaying foreign flags was disrespectful to national symbols and constituted treasonable offenses.
Usman stated, “The raising of foreign flags on August 5, 2024, by some protesters is not only disrespectful to our national symbols but also involves treasonable felony-related offenses. Consequently, 10 suspects were arrested for flying Russian flags.”
The Commissioner highlighted the command’s commitment to restoring peace and order, protecting life and property, and ensuring a measured response that respects the rights of peaceful protesters while addressing those engaged in violence or unlawful activities.
In addition to the arrests for flag-related offenses, 101 protesters were detained for violent activities. Usman expressed concern over the looting of both public and private properties during the protests. Key establishments affected include the Gombe State Revenue Recovery Tribunal, Bima Lodge, Gombe State Bureau of Public Service Reform, NITEL Company, and Blue-J Motors.
Usman added, “The looting of public and private property during these protests is a grave concern. Such actions undermine the rule of law, disrupt communities, and harm businesses.”
The police command reiterated its dedication to maintaining law and order while addressing the challenges posed by the protests.
