On 7 August 2024, the 42nd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff took place in Abuja. Notably, the defence chiefs from Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso were absent, as these countries had announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS earlier this year. The meeting is expected to address the security gaps left by their absence and explore solutions to emerging threats linked to political instability in the region.
