President Bola Tinubu has emphasized that the safety and well-being of Nigerians, particularly those in mining communities, must be prioritized by companies involved in mineral exploration. During a presentation by participants of the National Defence College (NDC) on Thursday in Abuja, Tinubu underscored his administration’s commitment to ensuring that mining activities do not compromise the health of citizens or the environment.
The president received a detailed presentation titled “Harnessing the Mining Industry for Enhanced National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria by 2035,” prepared by Course 32 participants of the NDC. Tinubu praised their work, acknowledging the crucial role of the mining sector in diversifying Nigeria’s economy and contributing to national security.
Tinubu also directed security agencies to intensify their efforts against illegal mining operations, highlighting the need to protect the nation’s resources from exploitation by unauthorized entities.
In addressing the potential health risks associated with mining, Tinubu expressed concern for those living near mining sites, emphasizing the importance of providing medical facilities and other protective measures to safeguard their well-being.
The president also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the permanent headquarters of the NDC in Abuja, acknowledging the college’s vital role in national development. He praised the NDC for its contributions to security and development, noting the institution’s global reputation and the diverse international participation in its programs.
Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Olotu, Commandant of the NDC, echoed the president’s sentiments and highlighted the need for continued support to complete the college’s permanent site, which has been under construction since 2010.
