Lee Carsley has been named interim manager of the England national football team for the upcoming Nations League matches in September. The English Football Association (FA) announced that Carsley, the former England Under-21 coach, will lead the team temporarily while the search continues for a permanent successor to Gareth Southgate.
Carsley, who has a deep understanding of the players and international football, was selected to ensure continuity within the squad. His primary objective is to guide England to success in the UEFA Nations League. With a background as a former Premier League midfielder and a successful stint as the England Under-21 coach, where he led the team to the European Championship title in 2023, Carsley is seen as a strong interim choice.
FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham praised Carsley, stating, “Lee is a fantastic coach who is well known to the majority of our current senior squad having worked with most at international or club level. He offers us a very strong interim solution, and we are confident he will perform well in the UEFA Nations League games ahead.”
Ben Futcher will step in as the new England Under-21 coach, with further details about the coaching teams for both squads to be announced soon. England is set to face the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Saturday, September 7, followed by a home match against Finland three days later.
