The Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa has announced that one of its staff members, Dr. Salihu Ibrahim, has developed a software application aimed at the early detection of diabetes and breast cancer. Dr. Ibrahim, who heads the Medical Biochemistry Department and is a noted phytomedicine researcher, created the software to help mitigate the impact of these significant health issues in Nigeria and Africa.
According to the university’s Chief Information Officer, Alhaji Abdullahi Yahaya, the software is designed to assess users’ risk levels for diabetes and breast cancer. It does not prescribe medication but categorizes the risk as high, medium, or low, advising users to seek medical attention if necessary. This tool is particularly beneficial for people in rural areas, allowing them to evaluate their health risks from home.
Dr. Ibrahim was inspired to create the breast cancer detection app during an Innovation Hub Training sponsored by the university. The app is user-friendly and designed to be accessible even to women without higher education, utilizing simple and pictorial guides.
The applications have been licensed with the Nigerian Copyright Commission, but they have yet to be uploaded to the Play Store as they await commercialization and potential investment.
