In Bangladesh, twin jailbreaks have resulted in at least 12 inmate deaths and the escape of hundreds of prisoners amid escalating unrest following the removal of long-time leader Sheikh Hasina. The chaotic situation began after Hasina’s abrupt resignation and departure from the country after 15 years in power.
On Thursday, a breakout attempt at Jamapur Prison led to the deaths of six convicts when guards were attacked with iron rods and sharp weapons. The guards had to open fire to regain control.
Another jailbreak occurred at Kashimpur High Security Prison, located 30 kilometers north of Dhaka, on Tuesday. Six inmates were killed as prisoners used tools to assault guards and break through the main gate, leading to the escape of 203 inmates. The prison houses some of the country’s most notorious criminals, including Islamist extremists.
These incidents are part of a broader trend of jailbreaks and unrest across Bangladesh since the student-led uprising that toppled Hasina’s government. More than 800 prisoners escaped from Narsingdi jail in July, and over 500 fled a Sherpur jail on the day of Hasina’s ouster.
The unrest has resulted in over 450 deaths during clashes between police and protesters, and police unions have gone on strike, demanding improved safety. While more than half of the country’s police stations have reopened, the situation remains volatile.
