Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) and ex-governor of Anambra State, has sharply criticized Nigerian leaders for squandering the resources and infrastructure left behind by colonial rulers.
In an interview with Why Not Afrika, Obi expressed frustration over the deterioration of economic assets and infrastructure that were once thriving under colonial administration. He pointed to the Onitsha area of the River Niger, which was a hub of economic activity due to colonial investments, as a prime example of neglected resources.
Obi lamented that while the River Nile in Egypt is a vital economic asset, the River Niger has been underutilized and allowed to fall into disrepair. He argued that Nigerian leaders have failed to build on the foundations laid by the colonial masters, leading to wasted potential and resources.
“The resources that were once a source of revenue and economic activity have been neglected and allowed to decay. The colonial infrastructure that supported transportation and trade has been left to ruin,” Obi said. “The question arises: What has independence achieved if we have only seen the destruction of what was built before?”
Obi’s remarks underscore his belief that the failure to properly manage and utilize the country’s resources is a significant issue, questioning the true benefits of independence in light of ongoing mismanagement and neglect.
