The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has firmly rejected allegations of terrorism financing and other serious crimes made against its National President, Joe Ajaero, by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). Benson Upah, the NLC’s head of information, dismissed the accusations as baseless and a deliberate attempt to discredit the Labour movement.
The police had issued a letter dated August 19, 2024, accusing Ajaero of involvement in terrorism financing, treasonable felony, cybercrime, and related offenses. The letter, signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team, summoned Ajaero for questioning and warned that an arrest warrant would be issued if he failed to appear.
In an interview with ARISE NEWS, Upah condemned the charges, stating that they were unfounded and aimed at undermining the NLC’s reputation. He emphasized that the NLC’s primary concern is the integrity, sovereignty, and welfare of Nigerians, not engaging in criminal activities.
Upah stated, “They talked about conspiracy, treasonable felony, terrorism financing, and cybercrime. I want to assure you with every sense of honour that we have nothing to do with those crimes. The state has awesome powers, but they have picked on the wrong customer. We don’t even have enough money to meet our needs. We will now engage in terrorism financing. It is plain mischief.”
The NLC’s response highlights their strong stance against the allegations and their commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian workers.
