A Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has granted an application for substituted service on several key witnesses involved in the ongoing inquest into the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. The witnesses include Azeez Fashola, also known as Naira Marley, and Samson Eletu, alias Sam Larry, among others.
The court’s decision followed an application by Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, who sought to summon additional witnesses to testify about the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death. The court permitted the witness summons to be served through a reputable national newspaper and social media platforms to ensure timely compliance.
The legal team representing the Aloba family, led by Wahab Shittu SAN, emphasized the need for these witnesses to provide evidence on what they know regarding Mohbad’s death, which occurred under suspicious circumstances on September 12, 2023. The court also granted an application to recall Mohbad’s wife, Wunmi, and the Investigating Police Officer (IPO), ASP Muhammad Yusuf, to clarify new issues that have arisen during the inquest.
Mohbad, who was 27 years old at the time of his death, had left Marlian Music, the record label owned by Naira Marley, in February 2022. His death has sparked widespread controversy and led to the arrests of Naira Marley and Sam Larry, with the Lagos State Police Command initiating a special investigation into the case.
