The Lagos State Government is rolling out a new initiative aimed at advancing waste recycling and promoting the circular economy. The campaign, named ‘Eco Circulate,’ will officially kick off in Badagry on Saturday at St. Thomas Primary School, Agbalata Market Road.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Office of the Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy, is designed to heighten awareness and encourage adoption of circular economy practices throughout Lagos.
According to a statement released on Thursday, the ‘Eco Circulate’ programme is anticipated to generate between 10,000 and 30,000 jobs, spark entrepreneurial ventures, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over two million tonnes annually in Lagos State.
Residents participating in the scheme will be rewarded for recycling materials such as plastic bottles, water sachets, waste oil, electronic waste (including phones, laptops, and household appliances), and textiles. Incentives include health insurance, free public transport, foodstuffs, cooking energy, and airtime/data.
The campaign will span across all 57 local government areas and local council development areas in Lagos State. This initiative follows the March launch of the model community recyclable management project, part of the state government’s efforts to enhance environmental cleanliness and support the administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S agenda.
