The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of eight Commissioners of Police to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs). These promotions were part of a broader elevation process, with a total of 684 officers advancing to higher ranks within the force.
The announcement was made on Friday through a statement by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations for the PSC. The promotions were approved during the first Plenary Meeting of the new Board of the Commission, held on August 30, 2024.
In addition to the promotion of eight Commissioners to AIGs, 15 Deputy Commissioners of Police were elevated to full Commissioners, 52 Chief Superintendents of Police were promoted to Assistant Commissioners, 525 Superintendents were raised to Chief Superintendents, and 84 Deputy Superintendents advanced to Superintendents of Police.
The newly promoted AIGs include CP Benneth Igwe of the Federal Capital Territory Command; Suleiman Mohammed Abdul, acting AIG at Force Headquarters, Abuja; CP Augustina Nwuka Ogbodo of Ebonyi State Command; CP Stephen Olanrewaju of Admin Works at Force Headquarters, Abuja; CP Kenechukwu Onwuemelie of Abia State Command; CP Fayoade Adegoke Mustapha of Lagos State Command; CP Adegboyega Funsho Adegboye of Admin FID, Abuja; and CP Mohammed Bala Labbo of Communication DICT at Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), emphasized that the promotions were merit-based, stating that all officers must undergo formal assessments before consideration for promotion, a requirement aligned with Public Service Rules. He also assured that the Commission would not delay the promotion of deserving officers but insisted that all advancements must be earned.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has been notified of the approved promotions for necessary actions and implementation.
