Former spokesman for the Obi/Datti campaign organization, Kenneth Okonkwo, has expressed skepticism about the opposition parties’ ability to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections. Okonkwo alleged that Tinubu managed to navigate Nigeria’s political system to secure his presidential ambition and is unlikely to allow the opposition to challenge his position successfully in 2027.
Speaking during an interview with Arise TV on Tuesday, Okonkwo criticized the opposition parties for failing to hold the government accountable and prove to Nigerians that they can provide better governance. He emphasized that political success requires unity within one’s group and collaboration with others, suggesting that the opposition’s focus on acquiring power from the ruling party has been misguided.
Okonkwo further argued that the country’s electoral and judicial systems have been compromised, claiming that power no longer stems from the people’s will but from the discretion of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary. He echoed the sentiments of the former governor of Jigawa State, stressing that the opposition would be wasting its time if it did not unite and effectively hold the current administration accountable before the next election.
He concluded by criticizing the courts for failing to uphold the law in the last presidential election cases, asserting that they acted in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Okonkwo pointed out that the opposition’s efforts would be futile unless they took stronger action to challenge the current system.
