Idara Bassey, a Lagos-based doctor specializing in buttock enlargement, has been arrested by the police following the death of a 36-year-old woman during a cosmetic surgery procedure at a clinic in Lekki Phase 1. The deceased, identified as Abiola, died on August 26, 2024, due to complications arising from the surgery.
According to Benjamin Hundeyin, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Bassey is currently under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti. Bassey had fled the scene following the incident but was subsequently apprehended.
The procedure in question, known as Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL), involves transferring fat from other parts of the body to the buttocks to enhance their appearance. Medical experts have frequently warned about the risks associated with this surgery, citing complications and even fatalities.
The investigation has also led to the arrest of the nurse who administered the injection to Abiola, who was reported to have lost consciousness and began gasping for breath shortly after the procedure.
Bassey’s arrest follows significant public and media attention, especially in light of previous incidents involving similar surgeries. The case has raised concerns about the safety and regulation of cosmetic procedures, as well as the prevalence of unqualified practitioners offering such services.
The police have yet to determine the specific charges Bassey will face, with further details expected to be revealed following the ongoing investigation.
