Nigeria’s under-20 women’s football team, the Falconets, suffered a 3-1 defeat against Germany in their second Group D match at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia on Thursday.
The match, held at Estadio Metropolitano de Techo in Bogota, saw Germany take an early lead in the 17th minute through Sehitler Alara, following a defensive mistake by the Falconets. Although Nigeria fought back and equalized in the 50th minute with a goal from Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, Germany regained control with Sofie Zdebel scoring in the 61st minute.
Despite a disallowed goal for Nigeria via VAR, Germany sealed the victory with Sarah Ernst’s third goal, leaving Nigeria needing a strong performance in their final group match against Venezuela to advance to the knockout stage.
Germany now tops the group with six points from two matches, while Nigeria holds second place with three points, following their earlier win over South Korea.
