On September 5, 2024, Ghanaian football fans erupted in anger following their team’s unexpected 1-0 defeat to Angola in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier held at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi. The match was decided by a late goal from Angolan substitute Felicio Milson.
The loss was particularly shocking as it marked Ghana’s first defeat at the Baba Yara Stadium since 2000. Despite dominating possession and having more attempts on goal, Ghana could not break through Angola’s defense.
In a viral video circulating on social media, frustrated fans were seen vandalizing stadium facilities in protest of the defeat.
Elsewhere in Group L, Burundi secured a 3-2 away win over Malawi, with Mokono Eldhino scoring the decisive goal in the 87th minute. This result leaves Malawi in a challenging position, with the group also featuring Burkina Faso and 2022 AFCON champions Senegal.
In Group A, Tunisia edged out Madagascar 1-0 thanks to a late goal by Ferjani Sassi, while the Central African Republic triumphed 3-1 over Lesotho in El Jadida, with Louis Mafouta scoring twice.
Friday’s qualifiers will feature 10 matches, including games involving defending champions Ivory Coast and former winners such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Zambia, and Senegal.
